The Climate Resilient Agribusiness for Tomorrow Project in East Africa is a 5-year, € 39 million project being implemented in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The project uses an inclusive Business Development approach to support the international and Dutch efforts on climate change and sustainable production in arable farming. The programme will work with and through the private sector and supports public sector partners in creating an institutional environment for wide-scale adoption of climate smart agriculture (CSA) practices. It is driven by 3 pillars: i) adoption of CSA practices & technologies in arable crop production farming systems and value chains; ii) acceleration of investments and business growth in selected value chains; iii) improved enabling environment for scaling out of CSA. Interventions are centered around business cases which are derived from a thorough climate risk assessment and financial analysis of value chains in oilseeds, pulses, potatoes and grains. A climate innovation and investment facility aims to further improve access to finance and facilitate scaling for SMEs and service providers who are ready to co-invest in making selected value chains climate proof. The project funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DGIS) is implemented by a consortium consisting of SNV (as lead implementing organization), Wageningen University & Environmental Research (WUR & WEnR), the CGIAR Programme on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), Agriterra and Rabo Partnerships.
Job Description
The junior Agronomist/Agribusiness Advisor will be responsible for supporting the adoption of climate smart technologies by farmers, SMEs and service providers in project targeted value chains. S/he will support specific climate smart field based activities and extension systems linked to inclusive business cases, which are potentially supported through the project’s climate innovation and investment facility funds for interventions and scaling. S/he will work in coordination with the senior agronomist and the senior agribusiness advisors, the M&E advisor and the project manager to contribute to cost/benefit analyses which will underpin the investments for effective climate resilient production systems. The incumbent will provide support to SMEs and farmer groups/cooperatives on the most appropriate climate integration strategies, which enhances the income for producers, agribusiness, service providers and other stakeholders in selected value chains. The incumbent will contribute to the joint learning of smallholder producers and SME adoption of climate smart agriculture. S/he will support the management and supervision of local extension providers in the business cases and pilot result based performance contracts. S/he will support technical expert missions from other consortium partners to strengthen stakeholder capacities in arable crop value chains, and in conducting climate risk assessments and other related studies.
Key Responsibilities
Participate in the value chain and climate risk assessments of prioritised commodities (pulses, oilseed, potatoes and grains);
Support the co-design of climate smart interventions based on farming systems approach and farmer typology and profiling;
Support the training and coaching of extension service providers on climate smart practices and technology adoption;
Support extension providers in delivering needs-based and practical trainings to male, female and young farmers;
Support the testing of profitable climate smart innovations with smallholder farmers in collaboration with the research partners;
Support technical field based missions from project consortium partners;
Contribute to improved service delivery to farmers by cooperatives, agri-SMEs and service providers in collaboration with consortium partners;
Support SMEs in the promotion, market uptake and scaling of evidence-based climate smart technologies;
Support the integration of renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions in agribusinesses;
Support the provision of tailor made information to producers and SME’s on crop suitability, climate risks and cost effectiveness/viability of interventions;
Support the implementation of business cases and the co-investment fund;
Support the identification and analysis of the barriers for the uptake of climate smart technologies and formulate recommendation to SME’s, financial institutions and government;
Support the brokering and creation of improved linkages between farmers, cooperatives, public and private service providers, SME’s and other relevant stakeholders through the development of inclusive business cases;
Contribute to learning on scaling CSA.

Qualifications
A relevant academic qualification in agronomy and/or farming systems
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience of working in agronomy advisory and/or agribusiness development;
Knowledge of technical aspects of priortitised commodities (pulses, oilseed and grains) and farming systems in east Africa;
Experience in famer extension, SME advising, and agribusiness case development;
Experience in climate smart agriculture design and financial analysis of climate smart technologies will be a plus;
Experience working with female entrepreneurs and gender integration approaches, as well as young-agri-enterpreneurs;
Knowledge climate smart innovation and farmer adoption;
Experience with result-based service provision and farmer organisation strengthening;
Excellent communication (written and oral), reporting and presentation skills;
Willingness to travel to all project locations
Additional Information
This is a full-time national role with the successful candidate being contracted on a 3-year basis with the possibility of renewal. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience and includes a competitive secondary benefit package.
